ICAR-CIFRI Outlines Strategies for Sustainable Fisheries in River Ganga Regional Worskhop for East South and South East Asia at Seoul
The ICAR-Central Inland Fisheries Research Institute (CIFRI) recently concluded two workshops addressing pivotal issues related to fisheries and conservation in the Ganga River at its Headquarters in Barrackpore.
On 26th September, the "Stakeholders consultation cum consultative workshop on fish conservation and ranching in River Ganga" was organized, marking the conclusion of a three-year National Mission for Clean Ganga (NMCG) project. The subsequent workshop on 27th September was titled "Stakeholders consultation cum consultative workshop on Hilsa fisheries improvement for sustainable fisheries and conservation in River Ganga. Dr. Basanta Kumar Das, Director of ICAR-CIFRI, provided insights into the project's achievements and detailed the way forward. Mr. Rajdeep Mukherjee, Policy Analyst, BOBP-IGO, participated in both workshops. Congratulating ICAR-CIFRI on the successful implementation of the project,
Mr Mukherjee highlighted that for future work programmes, synergy can be built with neighbouring countries as they share the same concern regarding the depletion of the health of riverine ecosystem and fish stocks, especially hilsa. He outlined the activities of the BOBP-IGO in this regard and called for cooperation to further support the novel initiatives of the ICAR-CIFRI.

BOBP'S Live Painting Event on Climate Change and Fisheries Underway in Kanathur
BOBP’s social connect vehicle, “Waves of Art” – the live sketching event, reached the shores of Kanathur, Chennai today (15th October 2023). In this fourth edition of the event, the focus is on “Climate Change and Fisheries” as a precursor to an International Conclave being organised by BOBP-IGO and NFDB on climate change and fisheries governance from 17-19 October 2023 in Mahabalipuram.
Prominent artists from Chennai and urban sketchers from Kochi are taking part in the Kanathur event, sharing their views on climate change and fisheries. Eminent art director and production designer Padmashri Thota Tharani also joined the artists and interacted with them.
The participants started their day by joining a beach clean-up drive to raise awareness among the local community and the beachgoers. The collected garbage will be converted into sculpture to serve as a visual reminder of the impact of pollution on our coastal environments. The ArtCube Gallery is co-organizing the event and providing the venue.

He interacted with the participants in the BOBP' social connect initiative Waves of Art.

International Conclave on Climate Change in Full Swing
Union Minister of Fisheries, Animal Husbandry and Dairying Shri Parshottam Rupala inaugurated the international conclave today (17 October 2023). Key message: The Indo-Pacific region, rich in resources and opportunities, faces shared challenges, especially those brought about by climate change. In line with the philosophy of "Vasudhaiva Kutumbakam" or 'the World as one family', it is imperative we collaborate to overcome challenges in the fisheries sector. To end, I resonate with the timeless wisdom: "When we heal the earth, we heal ourselves."

Union Fisheries Minister of India Released Fisheries and Climage Change Related Publications
Shri Parshottam Rupala, Minister of Fisheries, Animal Husbandry and Dairying released three publications covering diverse aspects of fisheries management and climate change on the occasion of the inauguration of the Mahabalipuram International Fisheries Conclave on 17th October.
The Artistic Publication “Waves of Art – Series 3” comprises sketches from the International Symposium on ‘Innovations in Fishing Technologies for Sustainable and Resilient Fisheries' held in Kochi during February 2023. The publication includes contributions from eminent subject matter specialists and artists from South Asian countries and Europe.
The second publication 'India's Marine Fisheries Sector Under Changing Climate-A Synthesis of BOBP Studies & Reports on Adaptation Strategies & Policy Perspectives' provides a synthesis of outputs from different works of the BOBP on the marine fisheries sector with implications for climate change adaptation.
The third publication was from Central Marine Fisheries Research Institution of ICAR summarizing result on the Implications of climate change in recent times. The publications will be available in respective websites.

FAO Delegation Visit BOBP-IGO HQ
A delegation from the Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO), led by Dr. Piero Manini and Dr. Tarib Bahri, visited the BOBP-IGO Secretariat on 20th October 2023. The discussion between the delegation and Dr. P Krishnan, Director, BOBP-IGO focused on the initiatives of FAO on climate change's impact on fisheries and the pivotal role of Regional Fisheries Bodies (RFBs). They emphasized the need for collaborative programs to address these challenges and ensure sustainable fisheries management. Plans for a joint initiative will be detailed in the coming months.
