Brainstorming Session on Ocean Accounting 

 

Coastal Research (NCCR), Chennai on 4 November 2022, jointly organized by Ministry of Statistics and Programme Implementation and Ministry of Earth Science, Government of India. Policy makers, researchers and experts from different national and international organisations participated in the meeting.

BOBP-IGO’s Social Art Publication on Gender Released by Kerala State Governor

 

The publication developed by BOBP-IGO jointly with Arnawas Charities, ICAR-CIFT, Asian Fisheries society was released by Shri Arif Mohammed Khan, Hon’ble Governor of Kerala on 20 November 2022 at Kochi, Kerala. Waves of Arts (WoA) is a social art project of BOBP-IGO and Arnawas Vasudev Charities. The “Women in Fisheries and Aquaculture – Through the Eyes of the Artists”, second in the series, is our collective appreciation of the role of women in fisheries. It has over 70 sketches made by professional artists and enthusiasts, portraying the role of women in aquaculture, fishing, post-harvest and marketing. Please click below:

Live Sketching Event at GAF-8 Global Conference

 

BOBP-IGO jointly with Arnawas Charities, ICAR-CIFT, Asian Fisheries Society organized a Live Sketching Event at GAF-8 Global Conference on Women in Aquaculture and Fisheries. About 10 professional Artists from Chennai and Kochi painted on the theme highlighting Women’s involvement in fisheries and Aquaculture. The event attracted attention from students and fisheries experts.

Comradery Approach Emphasized for Active Participation of
Women in Fisheries

 

Dr. Krishnan, Director, BOBP delivered the Key note address during the GAF 8, a global conference on gender at Kochi organized by AFS and ICAR-CIFT.

 

He highlighted the non-availability of gender disaggregated data for policy making and participation of women in works which do not have adequate regulatory support (eg. marketing in open places and seed collection.).

 

He said that the participation of women in fisheries sector from states with high production and education status, has not been as high as they could be.

 

The female sex ratio among the fishing community is decreasing compared that among overall population in India, unless checked, may lead to their marginalization, he said.

 

Dr. Krishnan called for developing gender- accommodating technologies, to ensure organic participation of women in active fishing arena.

Experts Participated in BOBP's Live Sketching Event

 

Fisheries and gender experts participating in the GAF-8 Conference at Kochi, from different parts of the world took part in the BOBP's Live Sketching Event during 21-22 Nov 2022.

 

The Waves of Art, a social art initiative of BOBP is building a network of communication ambassadors, who have committed to contribute for the cause of fisheries and coastal livelihoods.

 

Dr. S. Jayaraj, Program Coordinator from BOBP facilitated the side event organized jointly with Arnawaz Charities, ICAR-CIFT and Asian Fisheries Society.

BOBP-IGO Participated in the USI-HD International Multi-Lateral
Table-Top Exercise in the Bay of Bengal

 

The United Service Institution of India (USI), and the Centre for Humanitarian Dialogue (HD), Singapore organized an international multi-lateral table-top exercise (TTX) for the littoral countries of the Bay of Bengal on 22-23 Nov 2022 at the USI premises in New Delhi. USI is a 152 years old Tri-Service think tank dealing with comprehensive strategic security issues, and HD works to prevent and resolve armed conflicts around the world through mediation and discreet diplomacy.

 

The objectives of the TTX were to: (i) build trust and demonstrate potential for greater cooperation between the littoral states, (ii) increase participants’ understanding of the commonalities and differences in approaches of the maritime Law Enforcement Agencies (MLEAs) of littoral states and identify needs for – and gaps in – cooperation and establishment of crisis management mechanisms/standard operating principles. MLEAs from Sri Lanka, India, Bangladesh, Myanmar, Thailand attended the TTX along with experts and fisheries stakeholders.

 

Mr. Rajdeep Mukherjee, Policy analyst, BOBP-IGO attended the TTX and highlighted the need for humanitarian treatment of fishers at sea and improving safety at sea while calling for enhance multilateral coordination in the areas of IUU fishing, search and rescue operations. He also emphasized the need for proper documentation in the case of IUU fishing, especially in the instances where a fishing vessel is suspected to involve in non-fishing illegal activity such as drug smuggling, arm running, etc., which were welcomed by the

 

TTX.Inaugurating the TTX, National Maritime Security Coordinator of India, Vice Admiral G. Ashok Kumar PVSM, AVSM, VSM, said that Bay of Bengal is facing various non-conventional (non-military) threats such as climate change, oil spill, drug smuggling, gun running, and IUU fishing for which MLEAs involvement is required. Almost every NCT is transnational in nature and needs a multinational approach. He said that while dealing with the conventional (military) threat, a multilateral approach may be difficult, however, it can be done for non-conventional threats. He highlighted that the BIMSTEC can play an effective role in this regard.

 

The TTX concluded with the call for improved communication between the MLEAs, institutionalizing regular exchange between the governments on NCTs, the need for an RFMO in the Bay of Bengal, and partnering with the fisher community through awareness raising.

BOBP Participates in the High-Level Meeting on Aquaculture Transformation in Asia and the Pacific Region

 

FAO Regional Office for Asia and the Pacific (FAORAP) in collaboration with the Network of Aquaculture Centres in Asia-Pacific (NACA) organized a High-Level Meeting on Aquaculture Transformation in Asia and the Pacific Region on 22-23 November 2022 in virtual mode. 

 

During the meeting, Dr. P. Krishnan, Director said that Asian countries are leading the aquaculture revolution. However, there is little evidence of collaborative research among these countries. He added that these countries often face similar challenges and working in isolation might lead to “reinventing the wheel”. 

 

Dr. Krishnan highlighted the substantial scope of mutual learning in terms of management practices and regulatory frameworks in different countries, for framing suitable regulations for sustainable aquaculture. 

 

Over 50 participants including senior government officials from Asia- Pacific countries and officials from FAO and NACA joined the event.
