NDO-NORWEGIAN Collaborative Programme on Marine Spartial Planning

 

The National Centre of Coastal Research (NCCR) convened a Brainstorming Session at Chennai during 03-06 Oct 2022, coinciding with the visit of the delegation from Norway. The meeting was to elicit inputs from subject matter experts from India on integrating the data related to fisheries resources and stock assessment, shoreline protection and management, tourism, CRZ and ecology on the proposed web-based tool for Marine Spatial Planning, i.e., SAHAV.

 

Participating in the event on 04 Oct 2022, Dr. P. Krishnan, Director, BOBP highlighted the need for contextualizing MSP within the existing management and regulatory framework in India. He also called for evolving a data-sharing framework for collation and integration of historic datasets of various themes into the national MSP platform.

International SEAWEED Conference held in Chennai

 

An International Conference on the promotion of seaweed value chain in India – “Seaweed India-2022” was held from 28-29 Sep 2022 at the NCSCM Auditorium in Chennai. The BOBP-IGO organized the event with Smart Agripost, a leading Agriculture Magazine and ICAR-CMFRI. Ministry of Fisheries, Animal Husbandry, and Dairying, Government of India (MFAHD), and the Department of Fisheries and Fishermen Welfare, Government of Tamil Nadu (DFFW) sponsored the Conference. Mr. Jatindra Nath Swain, IAS, Secretary, MFAHD, Mr. A Karthik, IAS, Principal Secretary to Government of Tamil Nadu, Animal Husbandry, Dairying, Fisheries and Fishermen Welfare Department, Dr. K. S. Palanisamy, IAS, Commissioner of Fisheries, DFFW, Dr. J. K. Jena, DDG (Fisheries), ICAR, Dr. A Gopalakrishnan, Director, ICAR-CMFRI took part along with the diverse stakeholders comprising industry majors, start-ups, women entrepreneurs, eminent researchers, experts, technocrats and policymakers. 

 

During the Conference, Mr. Jatindra Nath Swain, Secretary, Department of Fisheries, Govt. of India interacted with the stakeholders including women entrepreneurs from coastal districts, and assured all support to address the issues that impede the development of the seaweed industry. 

 

Unveiling the state government’s plan to upscale seaweed farming, Mr. A Karthik, said that Tamil Nadu is creating a unique opportunity for investors and entrepreneurs to make the State one-stop destination for the seaweed sector. Dr. Palanisamy, highlighted the preparedness of the Department and elaborate the plan of setting up of seaweed hub in Tamil Nadu to bring together farmers, processors, end users and investors in a single platform. Earlier, Dr. J.K Jena, highlighted the research advancements made by the ICAR towards popularizing seaweed farming. Speaking on the occasion, experts from FAO and SEAFDEC shared global and regional experience in seaweed farming emphasising the need for setting up of a suitable management framework. Speaking on the occasion, Dr. P. Krishnan, Director, BOBP called for expanding the sector on robust scientific foundation and learning from the experiences from other countries in the region.

Possibilities for Promoting Coastal Aquaculture in Bangladesh Explored 

 

The BOBP facilitated a planning meeting between Syed Mahmudul Huq, Chairman, Bangladesh Shrimp and Fish Foundation (BSFF), and representatives from manufacturers and exporters of feed, probiotics, and other aqua inputs in India on October 06, 2022, at its Secretariat. The meeting was attended by office bearers from the Society of Aquaculture Professionals (SAP), All India Shrimp Hatchery Association (AISHA), feed manufacturers/ distributors, and independent aquaculture consultants.

 

The discussions focused on all aspects of possible collaboration relating to shrimp and fish feeds and other aqua inputs including technical expertise for the development of sustainable coastal aquaculture in Bangladesh; possible investment by Indian manufacturers in different aqua inputs including feeds in Bangladesh and identification of appropriate ingredients that could lower the carbon footprint.

 

The BOBP and the BSFF agreed, in principle, to work closely on facilitating cross-learning and experience-sharing between the stakeholders in Bangladesh and India and engagement with policymakers of both countries.

World Food Day Celebrated

 

On October 16th, World Food Day, the Bay of Bengal Programme along with the Sketching Club of Arnawaz Vasudev Charity, conducted a sketching event at Cholamandal Artists Village.

 

The event was well attended by senior artists and art enthusiasts. The theme for the day was to do a still life sketch of crabs and fishes. It was heartwarming to have young children from nearby Seventh Adventist School observe the artists working. Children were agog with interest, learning through observation. A Sunday morning well spent celebrating World Food Day.

EAF-NANSEN Programme Forum Concluded at Dakar, Senagal

 

The Ecosystem Approach to Fisheries (EAF)- Nansen Programme Forum was held at Dakar, Senegal during 18-20, October 2022. The event organised by FAO, Government of Norway and Senegal and NoRAD was attended by representatives from 32 member countries and Regional Fisheries Bodies from Africa and Bay of Bengal region. The Forum discussed the achievements and work plan for the current phase (2022-23) and the programs for the next phase (2024-29). 

 

Dr. P. Krishnan, Director, BOBP-IGO, who also serves as a Member in the Core Group of EAF Nansen, engaged in preparing the ProDoc 2024-2028 and coordinating the consultations, attended the Forum. 

 

The participants were taken onboard the research vessel, Dr Fridtjof Nansen at the Port of Dakar on 20 Oct 2022.

3rd SOI Global Dialogue with RSOs and RFBs gets Underway at Busan, South Korea BOBP-IGO

 

The third Sustainable Oceans Initiative (SOI) Global Dialogue with Regional Seas Organizations (RSO) and Regional Fisheries Bodies (RFB), organized by Convention on Biological Diversity (CBD), UNEP and FAO was inaugurated today (25 Oct 2022) at Busan, South Korea.The meeting, scheduled during 25-28 Oct 2022, was attended by heads of the RFBs abd RSOs from different parts of the world. 

 

Dr. Krishnan, Director, BOBP made a coordinated presentation on behalf of the RFBs and RSOs in the Asia Pacific Region (BOBP, APFIC, SEAFDEC, COBSEA abd SECAP), highlighting the current status and future strategies for strengthening cooperation and collaboration among the RFBs and RSOs in the region.

Art and Artists Mark the Colorful Beginning of the Global Conference on 'Gender Aquaculture in Fisheries'

 

Kochi: Sixteen prominent artists from Chennai and Kochi and ten Fine Arts students from RLV College, Thrippunithura congregated in the CIFT campus in Kochi (28 October 2022) to add colour to the forthcoming Global Conference on ‘Gender in Aquaculture and Fisheries to be hosted by ICAR-CIFT.

 

The event featured some prominent artists in the field including S Jayaraj, Raj Balram, Shailesh B.O, Sandeep, Sui Anand and Wilssy Johnson. During the camp, the artists showcased their style of painting and demonstrated techniques for students to achieve professional finesse in their work. Furthermore, the students got an opportunity to learn about the nuances of the art from the artists.

 

The one day painting event with the theme of women in fisheries was conducted by ICAR-CIFT in association with the Bay of Bengal Programme (BOBP-IGO), Chennai and Arnawaz Vasudev Charities at Cholamandal Artist’s Village, Chennai.

 

This art event is a pre-cursor to a special session being organised during the 8th Global Conference on Gender in Aquaculture and Fisheries (GAF8) being hosted by ICAR-CIFT and SOFTI during 20-23 November 2022. The GAF8 is bringing together delegates from 20 countries who will present their work on gender in the aquaculture and fisheries sectors.
